Blog 10 : Overview of research topic and essential question

How does the outlook on energy resources affect environmental issues and how they are handled?

Through my research, I have concluded that despite the environmental defects that this source of energy causes, people cannot see past something that sparked life for us. And although it might be stubborn and ignorant, people fail to change. I previously believed that it takes a serious event to force change, but even with epochs like the B.P. oil spill and Exxon Valdez we see little change.

The outlook on energy resources doesn't affect environment issues and how they are handled for long periods of time. People are poorly informed by bias medias and cannot handle the degree of seriousness, so they discard what they know. They tend to not care because it is not during their life time so why change? Leaving us stuck with insufficient progression.

Blog 9 : Overview of wiki

Through my experiences with wikispaces, I have found that it is an easy way to access and organize you research topic and findings. It allows us to seperate different information through labled pages and links. I believe that it will be benefitial for our presentations and learning process, sense we will know how to access and use different online devices such as this. The only problem that I have with it is that it is difficult to use with the school server.

Blog 8: Oil strikes war

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zalqYjcjA2Y&feature=related

This video is the striking reality on what oil is bringing upon the human population. We have become so dependent on this easy energy source that we do not want to find more efficient methods, but the oil crisis isn't just about finding a good source of energy it is also affecting the human population in more than negative ways. The United states is trying to free itself from the middle-east but, by doing so we are shredding apart another civilization on the other side of the globe. Nigerian people cower in fear as gangs take over their land with vicious force. Is oil really worth this much?

The United states prides itself on helping starving children in Africa, but are we just trying to re-deem ourselves for the other things we are causing? We seem to care little about the lives that we are affecting. How often do you hear about nigerians killed in gang wars do to the malicious attacks that are sprung because people are suffering in an undeveloped society. Oil sets classes among the world and delivers power to those who obtain. Because oil is our primary energy source, which gives us life as easily as it can take it back.

Most of these poverty strucken societies have little control over what happens to them. Strickly due to the fact that they do not have the resources to do so. If we are able to supply cities with 95% of the energy that they need to start a population, through solar and wind. Elements that this world will never run out as long as it supports human life the nwhy are we looking more deeply into this. People need to open their eyes and realize what is happening so that they can take action instead of letting the government do everything that it can to gain power and control people that are suppose to be treated as equals. Why should anybody have a greater and more respectful life? Doesn't everybody deserve clean water and a heated house?

Blog 7 : Video review

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fVI3BRBC6o&feature=related

There Is No Energy Crisis, There is a Crisis of Ignorance. Simply put, we have the technology to switch from nonrenewable to renewable resources. What are renewable resources? They are a supply of energy that is endless, for example solar power allows us to harvest the suns energry. In 2030, the world is estimated to have a human population of 8 billion. Sustaining this population will only be possible through a big change because it requires enourmous amounts of elctrical enrgy and with the six billion people that live on this planet we are already under a stressed infrastructure.

We cannot continue with our ancient traditions that have brought us up until this point because we will only be killing ourselves. Physically our Earth cannot handle the way we are living. We are trashing our own home, poluting the air that we breath and spreading disease among our family. Only becuase change is not stressed because we are not thinking about the future of our planet only ourselves.

Reflection questions: What can you do to change towards a healthier planet? what predictions do you have for renewable resources? Do you think that energy is a big problem or something just exaggerated? What are your opinions on this video? what are your initial reactions?

Blog 6 : Future gas prices

Former Shell Oil Chief Predicts $5 Gas by 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br_tIm7PjbU

It is predicted that we will have a worse outcome in our political progress for energy, which will bring higher gas prices in 2012, uncertainty as to the future of hydrocarbons, and more regulation on the hydrocarbon industry. The former chief of shell oil fears that prices will be so high that we will have a back lash from the electricit and we go into reverse, going back to hydrocarbon only, instead of progressing into the 21st century of technology.

Today was my first day on the road with my truck immediatly after getting onto the road I had to fill it up. It cost me $40 to fill up less than half the tank. It is absurd to think that it is not the United States number one priority to come up with an alternate energy source. Especially when all experts believe that this energy crisis will turn from a global problem to a global cataclysmal.

Blog 5 : book analysis

Steffy, Loren C. Drowning in Oil. 1. McGraw-Hill, 2010. Print.

Drowning in Oil: BP & the Reckless Pursuit of Profit

The uncanny results of the BP oil spill left us speechless. Many of us are uneducated on the topic due to the lack of information or bias opinions that news stations parade on or ears. How many of us can truely say that we know all about the energy consuption of the world? Drowning in Oil: BP & the Reckless Pursuit of Profit gives us a rivitting look at the intentions of the BP oil company and the little regard that they have for the environment and the people and animals that inhabit it. Poor management lead to catastrophic events many not as famous as the BP oil spill, leaving us in the dark.

What we don't hear about is things like the employees of BP, fearing for their lives. Having to clean up the oil was said to have caused sickness and disease, but the explosion alone took 11 people's lives and left their families torn appart. The BP oil spill is just a small reflection of BP's atrocious history. Why do we continue to lean on oil? Simply because it has not yet become apparent to the world that from this point on oil can only cause problems for us.

It lifted us from a primitive society. Now leaving the Earth over populated and headed for disaster, we turn away from the idea that it is now becoming more and more necassary to find an alternative supply of energy, but who are we kidding? Human beings are to stubborn and selfish to change on their own. This book explains the opinions of politics through the mind of Loren Steffy, a business columnist, who cleverly exploits BP's business tactics and reasons.

Response Questions: Do you think that we are learning from the BP oil spill and similar tragidies? What do you think the importance of this book has to society? What is your opinions on the lives tacken from the spill? What do you think our future holds for BP?

Blog 4 : newspaper article

This article explains to the public of a study done by the German military that leaked onto the internet of what our futures hold for oil and how it will affect the inhabitants of the world. People are having a hard time grasping the fact that we have reached our peak oil and from this point on oil is depleating faster than it is being produced. Evidence of this is all around us, just as anyone who drives a car knows that gas prices are climing at an alarming right. But this isn't the most problematic thing that is going to occur. We can always find different methods of transportation that don't use gasoline and oil, but what about the security of our country, our economy and our government. According to this article, it is estimated that 15 to 30 years after the peak oil (which we are currently in) the impact of security is expected to be felt. Meaning we haven't seen anything yet.

Oil is the foundation of civilization. It is because of oil that the Earth's population has increased at a staggering rate. So, it is common sense that when we take away our foundation, civilization will crumble. This is a scary thought because it is well in our lifetime. This isn't something that is said to happen hundreds of years from now but mearly, decades. Oil determines a nation's power it is what runs our military, our economy and our goverment. The United States of America currently imports approximately 60 % of our oil. Without these imports our country would fall by the side leaving us powerless.

Reflection Questions: What do you think the problems are with importing oils from other countries? Do you think it would benefit the United States to find an alternative fuel source? What do you think will happen if the world continues to consume fuels at the rate it is doing? How do you think life without oil would affect the citizens of the world? Do you think that oil truely determines the power of nations? If we do run out of oil in the estimated time, what types of affects do you think it will have on economy, government, people and relations with other countries?

Blog 3 : response to magazine article

It is hard to explain the emotions that will rush through your mind after reading about the tragic BP oil spill. You would think that it would have a dramatic impact on our society, our environment and the way that we think. But it seems to have been a thing of the past. "The worst environmental disaster America has ever faced," proclaims our president and we brush it off as though nothing has happened. Experiencing an epoch such as this, should have pushed us to our limit and forced change upon us. Even today we are still recovering from everything that the oil spill has put us through and people have the audacity to say that it was an exaggeration. It cost us the lives of human beings and is continuing to ruthlessly take the lives of species indiginess to the area.

I truely believed that people could not change until they were forced to experience the tramatic and catasrophic happenings for themselves, but even after an event like this, we Americans cannot even push ourselves to make little effort towards a bit of change. Which makes me question, have we seen the worst to come?

"Yes, the spill killed birds — but so far, less than 1% of the number killed by the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska 21 years ago. Yes, we've heard horror stories about oiled dolphins — but so far, wildlife-response teams have collected only three visibly oiled carcasses of mammals. Yes, the spill prompted harsh restrictions on fishing and shrimping, but so far, the region's fish and shrimp have tested clean, and the restrictions are gradually being lifted. And yes, scientists have warned that the oil could accelerate the destruction of Louisiana's disintegrating coastal marshes — a real slow-motion ecological calamity — but so far, assessment teams have found only about 350 acres of oiled marshes, when Louisiana was already losing about 15,000 acres of wetlands every year." This section of the article states evidence of devistation and acts as though they are no big deal becuase it hasn't made as much damage as other catastraphies. But I mean it only distroyed 350 acres of land. This just shows how selfish and reluctent to change people really are and how hard it will be to get people to take steps forward to alternative methods that will ultimitly benefit the world as a whole community, instead of being stubborn and only do what is most convenient for ourselves.

Reflection questions: Do you think that we will be forced to change eventually? what is your opinion on the article? How do you think events like the BP spill affect our daily lives? What are your opinions on alternative methods of fuel and energy? After reading the article do you think that you will make a conscious effort to change? Do you think people will ever bring themsleves to change?

Blog 2 : summary and analysis of website

http://www.3k88.com/
"Peak Oil Crisis." Greedzilla. Giles, n.d. Web. 14 Apr 2011. <http://www.3k88.com/>.

This website talks about where the world is estimated to be in terms of oil and the affects that the reckless oil depletion will have on us when we run out of oil. It also explains how foriegn oil is in control of our economy and how it could affect our population.

It also states the serious side affects that oil has on our society, our lives and the globe. For example, running out of oil would cause a huge energy crisis because we depend almost souly on oil for energy if we were to run out, nations would be in a fight for energy which could cause a World War. It also explains what we can do to help fight the oil crisis, but it leaves out the environmental issues that oil causes and what it is doing to human life which is a big part of the social aspect.

Reflection questions: How do you think running out of oil in 2030 will affect you or your loved ones?
The United States imports about 2/3 of its oil. How does this affect americans and our economy?
How do you think the compitition for oil will affect different nations?
What are the benefits of alternative energy sources?

Blog 1 : overview of topic

The topic that I have chosen to research is the demand for oil and its effects on society. I have decided on this topic because it something that affects every human being on this planet. Today, Americans would not be able to function properly without a steady supply of energy, but as our dependence on foriegn oil increases our nations power is declining. And that is just the beginning of our problems.

The global oil crisis is causing us to deplete the worlds oil supply. We are also failing to developing an alternative supply of energy that we can depend on. If we continue to use up oil at this rate it is estimated that we will be oilless by 2030.

I have decided to chose this topic to inform the people of the world that if we continue to use oil recklessly,  it will cause devestating problems for the entire world during our life time. I truly believe that the only way that humans will change there stuborn ways is if they are forced to experience what is truely happening first hand. People will realize the seriousness of this situation when it has dramatically changed their life and causes them to open their eyes and make a difference.
